Reducing Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke

Social Security disability benefits may be available if you suffer from a severe medical condition that leaves you unable to work. Heart disease and stroke are common causes of disability in the U.S.

According to a report from the Doctor’s Lounge, the Healthy People 2020 Initiative being put forth by the American Heart Association and other U.S. health officials, is calling for a 20% reduction in coronary heart disease and stroke.

Additionally, they aim to see a greater emphasis on preventing coronary heart disease by making healthy lifestyle changes.

Life Style Changes For Heart Health

Some of the specific goals outlined in the Healthy People 2020 Initiative include:

  • greater awareness of early warning signs and symptoms of stroke and heart attack;
  • more cholesterol and blood pressure screening; and
  • more preventative measures to reduce high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

The initiative has also identified what they call “Life’s Simple 7,” which includes:

  • At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise every week;
  • controlled cholesterol;
  • healthier diet;
  • controlled blood pressure;
  • healthy body mass index (BMI);
  • reduced blood sugar; and
  • not smoking.

These initiatives could reduce the chance of suffering a heart attack, the leading cause of death in the U.S., and stroke, the 3rd leading cause of death.

How Can I Get TDIU?

Many veterans are unable to earn a living because of service-connected disabilities. Congress created a special benefit called TDIU to help these veterans live comfortably. Also known as Unemployability. TDIU pays the same monthly amount as a 100% disability rating.
